HMRC always makes me smile when it refers to us as “customers”, as though we have a choice as to whether or not we deal with them!
The one area where we think that HMRC does behave like a business is its desire to be paid in full and on time. HMRC has the full arsenal of debt collection methods at its disposal plus the ability, in certain circumstances, to take money directly from peoples’ bank accounts. Although HMRC does say that “The vast majority of people pay their taxes in full and on time.”
According to the dictionary a customer is “a person who buys goods or services from a shop or business”. Anything less like a business it is difficult to imagine, but remember HMRC does not offer club cards or air miles or any other loyalty schemes – that’s where they will always be different in dealing with their customers.
