Accountants are known for their technical jargon and even I can put my hands up and plead guilty to past misdemeanours, but I’ve learnt it’s not the best way to communicate with your clients.
To be very clear it’s not only in the accounting world that jargon is used, in any specialised field you will find that a certain amount of jargon is required, whether specifically for the intended audience or for some form of validation.
What you need to remember is that accountants speak a language of their own but it’s important that you, the customer, understand what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. So what’s the best way to get the message across? In layman’s terms of course. I’m not being rude but ask them to spell it out if you don’t ‘get it’. It’s your business so a clear understanding of your accounting is a must.
So, ask for straight and direct communication and get to know your accountant and if you don’t get it, ask. It’s your business and if you don’t understand the accounting side then you’re not really helping yourself.
If you like the way we think – you will like the way we work.
