We’ve talked a few times in the past about the changing role of the accountant in the modern era.
40 years ago, an accountant’s role in practice was mostly limited to bookkeeping and tax returns. The old stereotype of a man in a grey suit with a calculator in his front pocket was around for a reason! With the advent of computerisation and the internet, the role of an accountant began to significantly change. In the last 5-10 years the service you receive when you engage an accountant has settled into a much-different sphere from the past.
Now, that’s not to say that a modern accountant can’t still handle the bookkeeping and filing side of your business. They might not carry around a calculator anymore, but now they have access to computers who can do calculations faster than you can blink! However, a modern accountant is a much more adaptable service provider who can fill a much wider area of gaps in your business. If you need it, an accountant can help you with anything from general business advice and management, through to cost streamlining and organisation, even down to serving as an interim Financial Director if needed!
So put away that old idea that you only need an accountant for your books. If it’s to do with the numbers of your business, then it’s to do with modern accounting!
